Alyss was still an avid reader and the books she read made a great impression on her fertile mind, especially Heidi.

This was a story about a little orphaned girl called Adelheid but her name shortened to Heidi, who, just by being sweet and caring herself, in the Swiss Alps brought about a complete change in the attitudes and behaviour of her grandfather, so much so that, whereas he had been at loggerheads with the other villagers, he changed to become a friendly part of the community. It gave Alyss courage to be just herself. Being still just a child, it fired her imagination such that she wanted to be like Heidi and bring about similar change in her own family.

And in Little Women, Louisa May Alcott drew upon her own experiences (although these were unlike the scenarios she portrayed in her story) to describe how tough things were for the girls with their father away during the time of the American Civil War, yet in face of the difficulties they had a strong and ongoing love for one another. Life was very hard for their mother yet she fostered this loving relationship between them all. This depth of love that existed between the various personalities in these stories was what struck Alyss the most, and it was this kind of love that she longed for, to exist in her own home, between herself and her sisters especially.

She identified particularly with Beth in the story. More than anything else she longed to be loved for herself, without qualification, and to lose the nuisance label given her by her mother and expressed non-verbally by others. Was that so hard? Here she saw it expressed in the pages of these books and it made her yearn for it, even though still so young.
